The First Developing of Humanoid Robot Pianist



Because of his ability to play the piano, a robot created by a team from Drexel University, this Philadelphia robot called as 'Elton John'. Is the ability of this robot as great as Elton John?
Humanoid robot developed by Alyssa Batula and Yougmoo Kim can play whatever music score spontaneously. Batula and Kim use the robot to explore the musical performance that includes the ability to fund recognition, harmonization, expression and interaction with real musicians.
So far, the robots 'Elton John' was able to play the piano at the level of 200 beats per minute. Unfortunately, although good at reading a digital music score, the second hand of the robot only has two fingers that can only play songs with simple melodies such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for example.
Quoted from New Scientist, Friday (17/12/2010), the fairly small-sized robot with a height of less than 40 cm. The whole performance is controlled by a small processor on-board processor and a computer that sends commands to play songs. Robot hand is controlled by motors and their position monitored and updated every 20 millisecond.
The 'Elton John' can push the wrong piano keys, but this could be detected by  tone detection algorithm, thanks to technology. If the tone is played wrong, the system will check if the tone fits with other piano keys for the robot does not repeat the same mistakes.
'Elton John' is also using algorithms to detect a tone of other musicians who played so that the robot can follow the game music and mutual berharmonisasi.
"This robot is the first step in developing a humanoid robot pianist. Furthermore, we plan to develop the system so that these robots will be collaborating in a musical play," said Batula.
He also said he and Kim will add a camera in the head 'Elton John' to be aware that the position correctly placed his hand on piano keys
